Hermès Store, Toronto [CA]

EeStairs + RDAI

This feature staircase, designed by RDAI for Hermes’ Toronto location, embodies a sophisticated fusion of structural precision and material elegance, aligning with the brand’s iconic luxury aesthetic. Nestled within Hermes’ refined retail environment, the staircase serves as both a visual anchor and a functional pathway connecting the store’s distinct levels.

Crafted from robust plate steel, the elliptical staircase achieves its fluid, box-stringer form through bent steel treads and risers, which have been left raw for the later application of marble cladding—an addition that will further enhance its luxurious presence. Due to the staircase’s size and complexity, EeStairs engineered it in four sections, enabling seamless installation through a large floor opening. A key technical challenge involved stabilising the staircase on its underside using both internal wall supports and posts; this structure ensures impeccable rigidity while maintaining a slender aesthetic.

The balustrade, with its dual-height guard rails, integrates an elegant lighting cove along the inner edge, casting a soft glow up the staircase. This thoughtful detail complements the handrail of painted-grade wood, contributing to a design that is as inviting to touch as it is to behold. EeStairs also provided a rounded soffit and smoke baffle, free from sharp edges, to maintain a fluid, cohesive silhouette. This precision-crafted staircase stands as a testament to EeStairs’ commitment to structural innovation and refined materiality, echoing Hermes’ dedication to timeless quality.
