At Aquon, an expert in water quality and environmental research, sustainability runs as a common thread throughout the organization. This vision not only influenced the design of its new headquarters in Houten but also shaped the iconic spiral staircase designed by Vakwerk Architecten in collaboration with EeStairs. This staircase, a visual and symbolic centerpiece, blends technical craftsmanship with an in-depth exploration of water and its fascinating structures.
The inspiration for the staircase stemmed from a simple yet profound concept: a single drop of water. At first glance, a water droplet might seem like an ordinary phenomenon, but when placed under a microscope, it reveals a hidden world of intricate structures and patterns. This microscopic universe, teeming with diatoms, silica algae, and plankton, reflects the wonders of nature on a minute scale. Every element within the droplet has a unique purpose and form, embodying a harmonious balance between organic and geometric structures. This microcosm not only highlights the beauty of water but also underscores its crucial role as a source of life and connection.
The creative agency Rich Dust drew inspiration from these microscopic structures and translated them into a detailed and refined graphic design. This design serves as both a tribute to water and a visual interpretation of Aquon’s mission: understanding and improving water quality. The microstructures were carefully studied and transformed into a pattern that is not only aesthetically appealing but also tells a layered story.
The balustrade of the staircase brings this vision to life. The pattern begins with larger forms, representing the visible aspects of water, and transitions into increasingly intricate details as the staircase spirals upward. This progression symbolizes how water, when examined more deeply, reveals hidden complexities. The pattern combines science and art, creating not just a visual impact but also inviting users to reflect on the value and fragility of water.
This meticulously crafted design is more than a visual element; it forms an integral part of the building’s identity. It brings Aquon’s work in water research to life, creating a physical and symbolic link between the organization’s mission and the architecture. By using the staircase, visitors become an unconscious part of this narrative, stretching from the smallest droplet of water to larger themes of sustainability and responsibility.
To realize these complex designs, EeStairs employed advanced CNC machinery. With unmatched precision, the wood department cut the pattern into plywood. This process was not only efficient but also minimized material waste, an important step toward the project’s sustainability goals. The balustrade was finished with a three-layer lacquer, ensuring it is not only visually striking but also resistant to wear and tear.
The staircase is more than a connection between floors; it is a storytelling element that symbolizes Aquon’s mission. The pattern subtly ties into its research focus on water quality and micro-life, while the sustainable material choices and production methods reflect Aquon’s values.
During the installation of the staircase, EeStairs’ craftsmanship and technical expertise truly shone. The staircase, including the impressive balustrade, was installed as a single unit, ensuring a seamless assembly and perfect finish on-site. This precision in design and execution underscores EeStairs’ commitment to quality and sustainability.
This staircase embodies the intersection of design, science, and sustainability. At EeStairs, we demonstrate that architecture can be more than functional—it can tell stories that inspire and endure.
This staircase is more than a functional link; it is a sustainable showpiece that perfectly aligns with Aquon’s environmentally conscious values. At EeStairs, craftsmanship and sustainability come together to create designs that inspire.
