EeStairs + Bruce Nagel & Partners Architects
EeStairs made and installed two feature staircases in this luxurious oceanside home at Westhampton Beach, New York. And one of them – connecting the ground and first floors – was a remarkable challenge because the architects, Bruce Nagel + Partners, produced a design that was elegantly twisted
As a result, the stairs have a strong visual flow, not least because the design avoided any unnecessary details that would detract from the purely sensuous quality of the stairs. EeStairs worked closely with the architects, assisting in the development of the design, and producing detailed architectural drawings and approved structural drawings.
Because of the geometry of the staircases, a precise installation was crucial. Both stairs have a subtly twisted S-shaped plan – the lower stairs with a full-height steel balustrade and closed risers, the upper stairs with a white steel base stringer, rift-quartered white oak tread veneers, and curved glass balustrade sections supplied by Westhampton. The design of the stairs created another notable geometric surprise: together, the two stair sections create a helix effect.
